Ottawa NWR Association is a non-profit 501(c)(3) co-operating association established in 1997 to promote the preservation of the natural and historical resources of the Refuge, foster its use and enjoyment by the public consistent with the protection and preservation of its environment, and engage in such educational, scientific, and civic activities as will assist the management of the Refuge in carrying out its mandates.
Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge is located approximately 15 miles east of Toledo, Ohio on the south shore of Lake Erie. It can be accessed by traveling east from Toledo on St. Rt. 2. The refuge entrance is one mile east of the junction of St. Rt. 590 and St. Rt. 2. Turn left into the refuge and follow the signs to the refuge headquarters or the hiking trails.
The visitor center is open 7 days a week from 9AM to 4PM. The trails are open from dawn to dusk.
ONWRA provides substantial support for Refuge Complex operations, organizing and funding a variety of programs and projects. We will make major contributions to the long-term health and vibrancy of the Refuge and its management.
People from near and far experience the Refuge Complex in person and through the internet as a world-class destination for wildlife enthusiasts, hunters, students, and families. We will bring increasing numbers of visitors here without harming the wildlife or the habitat.
With significant help from ONWRA, the Refuge Complex will grow. We will increase the amount of habitat available and grow wildlife populations in accordance with the Comprehensive Conservation Plan.
ONWRA will be a strong and influential voice with national, state and local leaders about the importance of conservation in general and of the Refuge Complex in particular. We will actively advocate for the land, water, air, and wildlife.
ONWRA will be a strong organization with sufficient human and financial capacity to achieve our mission and goals. We will build a structure that is durable, sustainable, and held up as a national model among Friends associations.
Through collaboration with the refuge and partners, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge Association promotes and supports the Refuge Complex in its mission to conserve, protect, and enhance natural resources for the benefit of wildlife and people.
"A strong and vibrant Friends association supporting a larger and sustainable National Wildlife Refuge Complex."
